Last Saturday, we welcomed a new edition to our family. A treadmill. For years, my husband has wanted to get one but we simply do not have a lot of room in our home. I gave him a million reasons not to buy one. "It's an eye sore", "Where are we going to put it?" " no one will use it..."
I had a health club membership last summer and closed it after the new year. I found that I wasn't utilizing it as much as I wanted to. When I did go, the machine I used the most was the treadmill. I would stay on it for an hour then drive home feeling accomplished and proud of myself.
When my husband brought the subject up again last Saturday, I finally agreed to go look. We ended up at Sears and found a nice one. Well, let me clarify, my husband researched, compared prices and made sure it had every bell and whistle. He knew what model he was going to buy. I tried it out on the sales floor and I liked it.
It came home and sat for two days. My husband and son tried it out, played with all the features. I wanted to wait until I had alone time to give it a try.
Monday morning, I hopped on. Music began pulsating from the speakers and as each song became increasingly faster in tempo, so did my walk.
I finished in 35 minutes. I walked upstairs, made my coffee and was happy that I didn't have to drive to the next town to work out, I just had to walk downstairs to our family room.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (today) mornings all began the same. Up at the crack of dawn, Lantus shot, finger prick blood check, Synthroid and then lacing up my sneakers. Today I increased my speed when a Kesha song came on and I began to run. 6.2 mph for .5 mile. JLo came on and I picked up the pace and ran a bit more.
2.5 miles total in 30 minutes. I'm happy to admit, my husband was right. This is easier than running off to a gym. I am happy to save time and gas.
For me, I have to take this journey one step at a time, one foot in front of another. I may have days when I feel the climb is hard and I want to give up, but I need to keep my chin up and focus on the prize. To live this precious life with good health and happiness.
